Frequently Asked Questions

We believe that good legal support starts with clear communication.

At RFV Legal, we want you to feel confident and informed from the very beginning. If you don’t see your question here, we welcome you to reach out. We're always happy to start a conversation.

We can't speak for all traditional law firms - some may offer approaches similar to ours. But RFV Legal was built intentionally to meet the needs of our clients and to practice law in a way that reflects our values and the work we truly enjoy.

We spent significant time talking with the types of clients we now serve — military families, small business owners, entrepreneurs, creators, and individuals navigating life transitions. We asked them what they would want in a law firm: how they prefer to communicate, how they want payment options structured, whether they prefer full-service representation or flexible, unbundled support.

Our firm is designed around those answers. We focus on collaboration, transparency, flexibility, and proactive solutions - delivering trusted legal support tailored to your goals, not ours.

It depends — but in most cases, probably not. At RFV Legal, our relationships are built on mutual trust: you trust us to handle your legal matter with care, and we trust you to honor your payment terms. As long as invoices are paid on time, we typically do not require an upfront retainer.

We understand that life happens, and if you need more time to pay, we ask that you communicate with us before your payment is due. We're committed to working with our clients when challenges arise. However, if a client habitually fails to pay invoices on time, we may require a retainer to be held in trust. This retainer would not be billed against each invoice, but instead held until the end of the matter, applied to your final bill, with any balance payable at that time.

All payment expectations, including any retainer requirements, will be clearly outlined in your engagement agreement - so everything is transparent from the start and there are no surprises.

Unbundled legal services — also called limited scope representation — allow clients to hire an attorney for help with specific tasks instead of full case management. This can include drafting legal documents, reviewing contracts, advising on next steps, or coaching clients through procedures without formally appearing in court.

At RFV Legal, unbundled services are part of our commitment to providing flexible, client-centered support. We work with you to identify exactly where legal help is needed, giving you professional guidance and practical solutions without unnecessary commitment or cost.

Unbundled services are ideal for individuals and businesses who want focused legal support while maintaining control over parts of their case or project. It’s a modern, practical option that offers greater access to trusted legal advice when and where you need it most.

Unbundled legal services are a great fit if you need help with a specific task — like reviewing a contract, drafting a legal document, or receiving strategic advice — without full case management. They are designed to give you targeted support where you need it most, while you remain responsible for managing other parts of your matter.

Because unbundled services are limited in scope, it’s important that both you and your attorney are clear about what is — and isn’t — included. If your needs expand beyond the original scope, we will discuss the changes with you and sign a new fee agreement to cover the additional services. This ensures transparency, protects everyone’s expectations, and keeps your legal support aligned with your goals.

In most cases, probably not - and that's intentional. RFV Legal is built around a collaborative, preventative approach to legal support, not courtroom litigation. We believe that if you need a litigator, you deserve someone who loves the courtroom and excels in that environment — and that’s not who we are. Our passion is in resolving conflict before it escalates, and helping you build strong, practical solutions outside of court.

As a cloud-based firm, we serve clients across multiple states, but may not be physically located near the courthouse with jurisdiction over your case. Additionally, because some of our attorneys are military spouses, they may be licensed in your state but living elsewhere, or may relocate during your representation.

In limited situations, we may assist with one-time emergency hearings or represent clients in minor matters like traffic violations or hunting-related misdemeanors. If this could apply to your case, we’re happy to discuss your options during your consultation.

RFV Legal supports a wide range of clients who value practical, personalized legal solutions. We commonly serve:

  • Military members, veterans, and military families seeking support with legal planning, divorce, or transitions.

  • Small business owners, coaches, creators, and influencers who need guidance launching and protecting their businesses.

  • Businesses seeking fractional general counsel services — companies that need regular legal advice but don’t require a full-time in-house attorney.

  • Entrepreneurs focused on privacy compliance and AI protections, needing help navigating policies and practical implementation.

  • Clients who need targeted legal support — such as quick contract reviews, legal letters, or strategic consultations.

  • Individuals seeking collaborative divorce services, prioritizing respectful, solutions-focused resolutions.

  • Investment property owners needing assistance with legal agreements for their rental properties - specializing in vacation rental agreements.

  • Buyers and sellers handling real estate transactions without a traditional agent, requiring bespoke contracts or real estate contract reviews. (Please note: we do not currently offer full real estate closing services.)

Our clients are individuals and businesses who want proactive legal support — not endless conflict — and who value collaboration, clarity, and trusted partnership.

Our rates and payment terms vary depending on the client, the legal matter, and the support needed. We do not maintain a standard hourly rate because we believe every case - and every client - deserves a tailored approach. Legal representation is important, and finances shouldn't be a barrier to access. Whenever possible, we work with clients to create payment arrangements that fit their circumstances, including flat fees, structured payment plans, or deferred payments tied to funding events.

While we are proud to spend many hours on pro bono efforts, RFV Legal is not currently accepting new pro bono clients. However, we are always open to discussing your situation and exploring what arrangements might be possible.

All payment expectations will be clearly detailed in your engagement agreement, so there is full transparency from the start. If agreed payment terms are not kept, we may require switching to a traditional retainer-based arrangement to ensure ongoing service and trust.

We are always happy to discuss your case and explore whether RFV Legal is the right fit. However, if your situation is highly contentious and focused on aggressive litigation, we may not be the best match. Our firm is built around collaboration, proactive problem-solving, and minimizing conflict wherever possible.

That said, if you are open to exploring a collaborative or less adversarial approach — even in a challenging situation — we would be happy to talk with you. Sometimes the right process can make all the difference.

At RFV Legal, we understand that flexibility matters. We offer several types of fee arrangements depending on your legal needs and circumstances:

  • Hourly Billing:
For certain matters, we bill at an hourly rate, tracked in 6-minute increments. Invoices are sent monthly and are due upon receipt.

  • Pay Over Time:
We may offer structured payment plans through LawPay’s client payment system, or in some cases, directly through RFV Legal. Payment plans must be arranged in advance and confirmed in your engagement agreement.

  • Flat Fee Arrangements:
For clearly defined work, we may offer a flat fee. However, it’s important to know that the flat fee only covers the scope of work outlined in your engagement letter. If your needs expand beyond the agreed scope, additional work will be billed at the hourly rate specified in your engagement agreement.

  • Delayed Payment Upon Funding:
In certain situations — such as if a client is awaiting a business funding event or a scheduled payment — RFV Legal may agree to defer invoice due dates. These arrangements must be discussed and documented clearly at the outset of representation.

No matter the arrangement, all payment terms will be detailed in your engagement agreement, so expectations are clear from the start.

RFV Legal provides flexible fractional general counsel services designed to meet the evolving needs of growing businesses. We offer flat monthly rates for a set range of hours, giving you predictable legal support. If your usage goes over the allotted hours, we offer discounted hourly rates; if you consistently fall under, we can apply a credit to your account. Hourly billing options are also available if you prefer more traditional flexibility.

Our fractional GC services cover a wide range of proactive legal support, including risk mitigation strategies, privacy policy creation, vendor and data agreements, service level agreements (SLAs), master services agreements (MSAs), statements of work (SOWs), and development of AI policies. If you need customized legal documents or strategic legal advice for your business operations — we can probably handle it.

We work alongside your business team to help you stay protected, compliant, and positioned for growth — without the cost of a full-time in-house attorney.

During your first meeting with RFV Legal, you can expect a conversation — not a sales pitch. Our goal is to listen carefully, understand your needs, and explore whether we are the right fit to work together. We'll discuss your goals, challenges, and what kind of legal support might suit your situation best. We'll also walk you through possible service options, estimated costs, and next steps.

There’s no pressure and no rush — just a thoughtful discussion about how we might be able to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

You deserve legal support that feels personal, practical, and empowering — and that’s exactly how we start.

We are always open to connecting with attorneys who share our collaborative approach and strong business acumen. RFV Legal is built on a unique business model designed to serve clients thoughtfully, flexibly, and proactively — and we are looking for attorneys who want to work within that model while contributing to the growth of the firm.

If you believe you are a good fit, we would love to talk with you. One of the advantages of our model is flexibility: you can work as much or as little as you choose, allowing you to shape a practice that fits your goals while supporting our mission of client-centered legal service.
